Abbe Creek School

Mount Vernon Road, west of Mount Vernon Considered by some to be the oldest brick school building in the state, Abbe Creek School features artifacts that were typical at the turn of the century. It will be closed for restoration work much of the summer of 2014.

Anderson Geology Museum

The three-story museum is nestled inside the Norton Geology Center, located on the east side of the Cornell campus in Mount Vernon. Its repositories contain thousands of fossil, rock and mineral specimens.

Now privately owned and called the First Street Community Center, Mount Vernon’s former uptown middle school is full of shops and activities (including in the gym and Uptown Theatre auditorium).

Lisbon History Center Main Street, Lisbon The Lisbon History Center is a local gem filled with information and artifacts about the Lisbon area. It’s always worth stopping in to see the latest exhibit. If you’re interested in doing some research about the history and families of this area, this is a place you must visit. Lisbon Splash Pad & Wading Pool

Lisbon’s historic wading pool is now gone, but is being replaced by a splash pad/wading pool in City Park. The project will be completed this summer.

The Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Theatre, now in its 35th season, produces several shows each year at various local venues. This summer, the group presents “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” July 23-26 at the Uptown Theatre in the First Street Community Center in Mount Vernon.  Tickets are on sale in advance at CarePro Pharmacy and are also available at the door.

Nancy Doreen Huffman Dog Park

Opened in 2013, this off-leash dog park is a great place to bring your pets. The fenced park space is part of Nature Park – it’s accessible from the park trail and Third Street Southeast.

Palisades Dows Observatory

To reach the observatory from Mount Vernon, go south on Hwy. 1 and turn right (west) on Ivanhoe Road after crossing the Cedar River. The observatory is operated by the Cedar Amateur Astronomers, a volunteer group, in cooperation with the Linn County Conservation Department. This regional educational attraction evolved with the donation of a telescope by the University of Iowa, and a large capital campaign resulted in the construction of a new facility with 20-foot and 16-foot observation domes.

Solar System Tour All over Mount Vernon Trace a path through the solar system on a human scale, starting with the sun in front of the First Street Community Center in uptown Mount Vernon. You can walk west at the speed of light, reaching a model of Earth 8.5 minutes later. Continue through the asteroid belt and find Pluto, now not considered a planet, west of town.

Sutliff Bridge

A few miles south of Lisbon (off Sutliff Road) is the historic Sutliff Bridge. Its survival as a tourist attraction can be credited to the Sutliff Bridge Authority, which saved the bridge when a new one was built in the 1980s over the Cedar River. The group worked to save the historic bridge again when the 2008 flood destroyed one-third of the structure.

Outdoor markets are held Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m. On the lawn of the First Street Community Center, May to October. Indoor markets are at that location from 10 a.m. To noon on Saturdays, November through April.

Palisades-Kepler State Park

Just west of Mount Vernon along the banks of the Cedar River, Palisades-Kepler State Park consists of 840 acres of towering hardwood trees, river bluffs, deep ravines, myriad wildlife and a large variety of wildflowers. “The Pal” is a nature lover’s paradise. Available to the public are 76 campsites with 45 electrical hook-ups, shower/restroom facilities and a trailer dump station. Camping permits are obtained by self-registration at the campground. Four rustic cabins are available for weekly rentals. All can be reserved through the Iowa DNR website. Palisades-Kepler is open year-round from 4 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., though some facilities are closed during the winter.
